4 Reasons Why This Time of Day Will Make You Have Stunning Photos

If you’re a photographer you’ve probably heard of the Golden Hour, which is the period of daytime shortly after sunrise or before sunset. but have you heard of the Blue Hour? The Blue Hour is a really fun time of day to shoot and so I created a quick blog post about what it is, why it will give you amazing photos, and how to shoot during that short window of time.

WHAT IS BLUE HOUR?

  • Blue hour in photography is the period of twilight in the morning or evening. It’s the moments right before the sun rises or sets.

4 REASONS WHY BLUE HOUR WILL GIVE YOU STUNNING PHOTOS

  • The colors are calming and not so bright and warm like they are when the sun is up.

  • The light is even. No shadows or blow out highlights to contend with.

  • Which makes it the easiest time of day to photograph especially for new photographers.

  • It’s usually the time that your clients are most relaxed and all of the “necessary shots” are done.

TIPS ON PHOTOGRAPHING DURING BLUE HOUR

  • Always have your clients face where the sun just set or is going to rise. This little trick with help light their faces and keep their skin from looking drab. Try taking photos of someone from all angles tonight after the sun sets and you’ll see what I mean.

  • Schedule your clients 1 hour before the sun sets. That gives you an hour of sun rays and up to a half hour for blue hour.

  • Up your ISO but no too much. If you like brighter photos like me, resist from making them too light. Blue hour is beautiful all on it’s own so let that imagery stay in your photos. I like to keep my ISO between 800-1000. Also, a little grain never hurt anyone.

  • Let this be the time you don’t give a lot of direction and you let the family just explore. Like I’ve already stated, the family will be more relaxed and used to you having a camera in their face. Be prepared for magic to happen!
